Commissioning has started at the Moscow plant of Mercedes-Benz. The factory of Daimler Group, established in the Solnechnogorsk district of Moscow region is getting ready to commence operations. According to Auto Review, the equipment installation of the newly built welding and paint shops has already been completed and the equipment work on the two assembly lines is coming to an end.
The electric substation is ready, the construction of a generator operated emergency power station is nearly complete and on the eve of winter, the boiler house has started operating, which heats the production sites throughout the plant. Commissioning has already started in welding and paint shops, despite being delayed for another few months: the production is due to be launched officially in May 2019.
A number of experimental Mercedes E-class sedans have been brought to the factory in August for the purpose of staff training. The vehicles have been disassembled completely to demonstrate the design features of the assembly. The Daimler plant in the Indian city of Puna has become the main training centre for the Russian workers, however, some of the staff have been sent to the factories of the company in Germany, Hungary and even in Brazil for internships.
The Mercedes factory in Moscow region is being built under a SPIC with the Russian government. Daimler has pledged to invest $250 million in the project. Approximately 1000 people will be employed in the enterprise, the production capacity of which has not been disclosed yet. According to unofficial data, the factory will manufacture around 20-30,000 vehicles annually.
Mercedes E-class sedan will be the first Russian assembly model. The production of medium-size GLC crossovers and the full-size GLE and GLS SUVs (new generations) will follow the E-class sedans at the plant.
Most of the manufactured vehicles will be sold in retail, however, state purchases have the priority, for which only vehicles with “Made in Russia” stamp will be allowed.
Only the most demanded versions of the aforementioned models will be manufactured in Russia. For example, E-200 model will be chosen for E-class, which provides 78% of the model’s sales according to Auto Review. The models with less demand will be supplied from Europe as previously (from United States in the case of GLE and GLC), which will allow orders with individual components. The localised modifications will switch to fixed equipment completely, on the other hand.
