As reported by Auto Business Review magazine, the operations will commence at the Moscovia factory of Daimler AG within the first quarter of 2019, where four Mercedes-Benz models will be manufactured: E-class sedan, GLE, GLC and GLS. The workshop buildings have already been erected and the industrial equipment is in the process of installation in Yesipovo industrial park in Moscow region, where the production will take place.
The general manager of “Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Rus” Axel Benze has spoken about the localisation strategies of the company, during an interview with Dmitri Panov from Auto Business Review magazine:
“We held a Supplier’s Day in November last year. Approximately 100 car component manufacturers came together at the activity. Currently, we are negotiating with around 60 of those manufacturers. Probably, by the time the plant commences operations, during the first quarter of 2019 according to our plans, we will have chosen a few partners. It’s also absolutely possible that some of our global suppliers will follow us here, providing us with their products.
We will do our best to localise as many components as possible, without compromising the quality of the manufactured automobiles. Tyres, wheel rims, brake pipes, glass, plastic components. Many parts can be localised, apart from a few, such as body parts”.
Axel Benze has also talked about the new production technologies to be used in the Moscovia plant:
“Two new, progressive technologies will be used in production: the first being the autopilot trolley, which will deliver the components to the conveyor line. This technology is operated by a computer programme, based on the data exchange platform “Industry 4.0”, which unites the entire production network of the company, assuring a more accurate and effective assembly. “One Roof Concept” is the second technology, which gathers the entire production under one roof. All assembly shops will be concentrated in the same building. The decision will not only reduce the distance between different production points, but also improve interaction amongst the staff, increasing the effectivity of human resources in the end”.
